No Hostility towards the Rich¡ªan Opinion poll of Wealth Distribution in Guangzhou
 
    
    The poll, carried out in March, 2003, phone-interviewed 516 citizens in Guangzhou randomly chosen as differed in annual income, occupation and ages by means of multistage random sampling. The results turned out that 53% were concern with the income gap, though their attention to this issue differed in degrees. There were 59% saying that the gap had been broadening in the recent years. Those considering the gap ¡°acceptable¡± accounted for 32.7% . And 32.5% considered the gap ¡°unacceptable¡±. Those respondents hold an contradictory attitude toward the reasonableness of the gap. 42% of the interviewees would admit their readiness for the income gap, while nearly 30% of interviewees with low income and low education would not. Altogether 63% positively commented that the high-income class could bring forward the society as a whole and 40% saw no general hostility towards the rich and reasoned the income gap for differed individual capacity, occupation and post, and social opportunities. They expected that the government would take immediate actions to narrow the gap by reemployment program, labor and a higher level of the lowest life provision for those households in difficulty.


A Tracing Survey on the Satisfaction of Guangzhou Dwellers with the Environmental Protection
 
    A telephone survey conducted in June, 2003 interviewed 505 dwellers in eight original districts of Guangzhou, who varied with sex, age, education background and income.
Results of the survey show a generally positive comment on the municipal environmental improvement in recent years. Compared with the percentage of 33.2% in 2001,the satisfation percentage is 17.1 point higher (50.3%)this year.And the unsatisfation percentage has dropped 17.9 point compared to the percentage of 28.2% in 2001. 85% of the interviewees have seen the overall environmental condition of Guangzhou in its progressing way and 78.5% of them has acknowledged the work on environmental protection and improvement led by the municipal government for the last two years. More than four out of ten think of the environmental pollution in Guangzhou as serious or relatively serious. is mostly concerned, 79.2% of the interviewees considered the vehicle waste gas as the most serious problem of pollution , compare to the 64.3% in 2001,it is 15 point higher this year. Other pollutants mainly concerned are daily garbage, industrial unprocessed water, industrial waste gas and noise.70% of interviewees are worried about being subject to the environmental pollution and 66.7% are confident of its improving prospects.
