A
survey was conducted in the middle of September 2003 through phone-interview
of 827 citizens living in the ten districts of Guangzhou, differing
of age, occupation and income.
The survey resulted that the satisfaction rate for urban environment
and sanitation is 54.9%,18 point higher than 2002 which were 36.2%.
Among the interviewees, 87.4% interviewees witnessed the improvements
of both environment and public sanitation in the past year, especially
after the breaking out of SARS. 80.4% are more or less satisfied
with the renovation and remedy work of the government to the cantonal
hygiene. 55.7% affirmed that the local people are aware of maintaining
public sanitation and 84.8% interviewees are more or less confidently
remarked on the further improvement on the environment and sanitation.
Still, there are 49.6% interviewees stating that Guangzhou is
by no means void of ¡°filth and disorder¡±. Facilities and spots
that are most closely connected in daily running, such as roadside
peddlers and stall-keepers, markets, railway stations, out-of-the-way
alleys and lanes, sanitary, etc, are graded low in the scale of
satisfaction, respectively 16.6%¡¢22.9%£¬31.7%¡¢33.4% and 35.1%.
The three cankers that ruin the civilized and modern look of Guangzhou,
as are criticized by the interviewees as a whole, are garbage
scattering, random posting and spitting.
