The survey was carried out
on 17th and 18th, January, 2004 through multistage random sampling.
831 local residents of Guangzhou with different age, occupation
and income level were interviewed by phone. It turned out the 79.8%
of them were concerned with the restriction and ban of autocycles.
There are 61.4% approving of a stage-progression of banning. Among
those who agree with the banning, 79% believed it will help cut
down on traffic accidents and 74% thought that it will be a solution
to grabbing-and-run, 66% and 64% were respectively confident that
it will help to decrease the waste gas and noise from motorcycles.
According to the survey 20% interviewees disagree with the banning.
Among them 80.2% believed that the banning will bring the traffic
inconvenience because public transportation at present is imperfect,
nearly 30% considered it reasonable to compensate for the motorcyclists
while 27% thought that the policy is to a small portion¡¯s disadvantage
but to a larger portion¡¯s interest, also there are 17% common that
it is unfair for them . In general, the interviewees held that the
banning of motorcycle will not work until the municipal government
considers it essential and key to improve and better the public
transportation system and speed up the road construction.
